Yes, you probably already know that Joe Biden is an author, along with his wife, Jill. Promises to Keep was published by Random House in 2007, and his wife’s book, Don’t Forget, God Bless Our Troops, was published in 2012.
Now, it’s a bit different though.
The World Turned Topsy-Turvy
Yes, he’s no longer Vice President. But, life events also intervened to propel Joe Biden to a spot that you can bet he never wanted to hold in our hearts and minds. It took the death of his son, Beau. It took his greatest challenge: the Cancer Moonshot. And, it also took his decision to relinquish what some saw as his rightful place as Obama’s heir apparent in the Presidential race.
Sometimes the struggle of an individual man becomes so epic that his words ans actions reverberate through time, in a way that will not-soon be forgotten. He famously said, “I believe we need a moon-shot in this country to cure cancer. It’s personal. But I know we can do this.” And, we believed him.
Not Just About Survivors
The idea of the Cancer Moonshot was “to eliminate cancer as we know it.” And, yes, that’s an important and laudable goal. We all want that, and need it. But, it also suggested the dawning of a new era of cooperation. As Biden famously said, “No single oncologist can find the answer on his or her own.”
But, what that passionate plea also suggested was that if we could make it happen for going to the moon, and curing cancer; then, our collaborative forces could achieve even more… Imagine, just think of the possibilities.
He also said, “If I could be anything, I would have wanted to be the president that ended cancer, because it’s possible.”
If you get a little teary-eyed at the thought, just watch out for the books that will soon be coming our way. Flatiron just announced yesterday that they’ve contracted with Joe and Jill Biden for a total of three books — two from him and one from her.
Questions? Answers? Perhaps you’ve got many of both… We soon shall see.
