It’s Human Rights Month in commemoration of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the U.N. General Assembly in December 1948.

Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “The destiny of human rights is in the hands of all our citizens in all our citizens in all our communities.”

Mark Twain said: Every man is in his own person the whole human race, with not a detail lacking. I am the whole human race without a detail lacking…”

Ah Humanity…

Mostly, we seem to lament the state of humanity. What have we become? What do we do to one another? Every day brings fresh horrors, proof that there is no human kindness. You may not want to look on, or imagine, what we (as a human race, as humanity) are capable of doing. It’s sometimes simply unconscionable.

Somewhere out of the darkness, there seems to arise hope… even promise of a better future, a brighter tomorrow. The sun continues to arise every day, bringing with it what sometimes appears only as a glimmer of light until it grows into the dawning of a new day.

Amidst the simple acts of terror that split our worlds asunder, there are moments of inexplicable beauty. We see acts of kindness where none should be. We see survival against all odds, and we must see that humanity has a way of overwhelming the simple expectations.
